Treatment Begins by Restoring Your Body's Natural Balance

For many couples, the greatest hope is to welcome a healthy new life into their family. However, if pregnancy has not occurred after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse, it may be time to consider an evaluation for infertility.

In the past, the term sterility was commonly used. Today, the preferred term is infertility, reflecting the fact that many individuals and couples can improve their chances of conception through appropriate medical care, lifestyle modifications, and individualized treatment.

Common Causes of Infertility

Pregnancy is the result of a series of carefully coordinated events. An egg must be released during ovulation, travel through the fallopian tube, be fertilized by sperm, and successfully implant in the uterine lining. Difficulty at any stage of this process can make conception more challenging.

One of the most common causes of female infertility is ovulatory dysfunction, accounting for approximately 25–40% of infertility cases in women. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is among the leading conditions associated with ovulation disorders. Other common causes include blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, uterine conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, or intrauterine adhesions, as well as diminished ovarian reserve.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective

From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), infertility is viewed not simply as a problem of the uterus or ovaries, but as a reflection of an imbalance affecting the body as a whole. When the circulation of Qi and blood becomes disrupted or the body's internal organ systems fall out of balance, reproductive function may also be affected.

Traditional Chinese Medicine commonly classifies infertility into four major pattern diagnoses:

  • Kidney Deficiency – often associated with diminished ovarian function

  • Qi Stagnation – commonly accompanies chronic stress and hormonal imbalance

  • Blood Stasis – impaired circulation within the pelvic region and uterus

  • Phlegm-Dampness – frequently associated with PCOS, obesity, and insulin resistance

Goals of Traditional Chinese Medicine Fertility Care

Treatment focuses on enhancing blood circulation, regulating ovulation and menstrual cycles, improving the uterine environment, and supporting healthy endometrial development to optimize the conditions necessary for conception.

Traditional Chinese Medicine may also serve as a complementary approach for patients preparing for or undergoing assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI).

Because no two patients experience infertility in the same way, each treatment plan is carefully developed after considering the patient's constitutional type, lifestyle, hormonal status, and overall health.

Infertility treatment is rarely about achieving immediate results. Rather, it is a gradual process of creating the optimal conditions for the body to support a healthy pregnancy.
