Acupuncture During Pregnancy: What Helps, What's Safe, and When to Come In

You saw the positive test. After months (or years) of trying, it can feel thrilling and nerve-wracking at the same time.
One of the most common questions we hear next is: can I keep coming for acupuncture now that I'm pregnant? For most people, the answer is yes. Here's how pregnancy acupuncture works, trimester by trimester.
Is Acupuncture Safe While Pregnant?
When it's done by a licensed acupuncturist trained in prenatal care, acupuncture is generally considered safe during pregnancy. The care does change, though:
We avoid certain points that are traditionally not used during pregnancy.
Treatments are gentler, with fewer needles.
Later in pregnancy, you'll rest on your side with pillows instead of lying flat.
Always let your OB or midwife know you're getting acupuncture. We're happy to work alongside them.
First Trimester (Weeks 1 to 13): Calm and Steady
If you conceived after fertility acupuncture, IVF or an IUI, the first weeks can feel fragile. Many patients keep coming weekly through the first trimester for reassurance and routine. Acupuncture in early pregnancy often focuses on:
Morning sickness and nausea
Fatigue
Anxiety and sleep
Headaches
Second Trimester (Weeks 14 to 27): Comfort as Your Body Changes
This is often the easiest stretch, and energy tends to come back. Visits may drop to every two to four weeks unless something comes up. Common reasons to come in include:
Low back pain, hip pain or sciatica (see natural pain relief for back and neck pain)
Heartburn
Stress about work, family or the birth
Trouble sleeping
Third Trimester (Weeks 28 to 40): Getting Ready for Birth
Breech babies and moxibustion. If your baby is breech, your provider may okay moxibustion. This traditional technique warms a point on the little toe with a smoldering herb called mugwort. It's usually tried around 32 to 35 weeks, with your OB or midwife's approval, and we'll show you how to keep doing it at home between visits.
Pre-birth acupuncture. From about 36 weeks, many patients come weekly to help the body prepare for labor. The focus is on relaxation, the pelvis and feeling ready.
Swelling and discomfort. Puffy ankles, rib pain and restless sleep are all common late in pregnancy. Gentle treatments and a few home tips can make a real difference in comfort.
After the Baby Arrives
The weeks after birth are a big recovery. In Chinese medicine, this is a time to rest, stay warm and rebuild. Our post on blood building covers warming foods that help in this season too. When you're ready, our women's wellness care can support sleep, mood and energy.
