Relaxed neck stretch – natural back and neck pain relief in Herndon, VA

Most people who come in for back or neck pain have already tried the usual list. Ibuprofen in the desk drawer. A heating pad. Stretches from a video. Maybe a muscle relaxer that left them too foggy to work.

By the time they get to us, what they want is pretty simple: to sit through a meeting, sleep through the night, or turn their head to check a blind spot without wincing.

If that sounds familiar, here’s how we approach back and neck pain at Catch a Fish Wellness, and what acupuncture can and can’t do.

Why So Many People Are Looking Beyond Pills

Pain medication has its place. But for a lot of everyday back and neck pain, it isn’t meant to be the long-term plan. Anti-inflammatories can be hard on the stomach with regular use, and many people don’t like how they feel on stronger medications.

Doctors have been moving in the same direction. In 2017, the American College of Physicians published a guideline on treating low back pain that recommends starting with non-drug options. Acupuncture made that list, along with heat, massage, exercise and yoga.

How We Look at Back and Neck Pain

In Chinese medicine, pain usually means something isn’t moving well. Muscles keep guarding an old injury. Circulation slows in an area that’s under constant strain. Stress keeps your shoulders up around your ears all day.

So when you come in with a stiff neck, we don’t only look at your neck. We ask things like:

  • When did it start, and what makes it better or worse?

  • Is it sharp, dull, achy or burning?

  • How are you sleeping, and in what position?

  • How many hours a day are you at a desk or looking down at your phone?

  • How has your stress level been lately?

Your answers shape which points we use, whether we add cupping or bodywork, and whether herbs make sense for you. You can read more about how we treat pain on our natural pain relief in Herndon page.

What a Treatment Actually Looks Like

A visit starts with a conversation and a quick look at how you’re moving. Then you rest on the table while very fine, sterile, single-use needles are placed. Most people feel a dull ache or heaviness at a point, then settle in. Plenty of people fall asleep.

Depending on what’s going on, we may add cupping, gua sha or hands-on bodywork to release tight areas. If stress is a big part of your pain, we’ll work on that too, since calming the nervous system often helps tight muscles let go.

What the Research Says

Back pain is one of the better-studied areas of acupuncture research. The NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health rates the evidence for chronic low back pain as moderate quality in its overview of acupuncture’s effectiveness and safety. A large NIH-funded trial also found that older adults with chronic low back pain who had acupuncture ended up with less pain-related disability than those who had usual care alone.

That doesn’t mean acupuncture works for everyone, or that one session undoes years of strain. Results vary from person to person, and we’ll be straight with you about the progress we’re seeing as we go.

It’s Not Only Backs and Necks

We use the same approach for many of the other aches we see in Herndon and Reston: knee and shoulder pain, headaches and migraines, and foot pain like plantar fasciitis.

When to See a Doctor First

Please see a doctor right away if your pain follows a fall or accident, or comes with numbness in the groin or legs, new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, or unexplained weight loss. Acupuncture works well alongside medical care, and we’re happy to coordinate with your physician or physical therapist.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many acupuncture sessions will I need for back or neck pain?

It depends on how long you’ve had the pain and what’s behind it. A recent strain may respond within a few visits. Pain that has been around for months or years usually needs a series of weekly treatments. We check your progress each visit and adjust the plan.

Does acupuncture hurt?

The needles are far thinner than the ones used for shots or blood draws. You may feel a brief pinch, a dull ache or some warmth at a point. Most patients find their sessions very relaxing.

Can I do acupuncture along with physical therapy or chiropractic care?

Yes, and many of our patients do. Acupuncture fits well alongside PT, chiropractic care, massage and your doctor’s treatment plan.

Is acupuncture safe?

When it’s done by a licensed acupuncturist using sterile, single-use needles, acupuncture is generally considered safe. Mild soreness or a small bruise at a needle site can happen.

Will I be able to stop taking pain medication?

Some patients find they need less over time, but that’s a decision to make with your doctor. Please don’t stop or change prescribed medication on your own.
